COE Faculty Awarded Seed Funding in Collaboration with University of Maine
BioE Assistant Professors Jiahe Li and Mingyang Lu, ECE Professor & Chair Srinivas Tadigadapa, ECE Assistant Professors Sarah Ostadabbas and Xue “Shelley” Lin, and ECE Associate Research Scientist Ataur Katebi were among the faculty chosen for five competitive collaborative research projects with the University of Maine in the areas of artificial intelligence, earth and climate sciences, health and life sciences, manufacturing, and marine sciences.

Developing Electrically Charged Biomaterials for Drug Delivery
BioE Assistant Professor Ambika Bajpayee, in collaboration with Ryan Porter from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, was awarded a $2.2M grant from the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases for “Intra-Cartilage Depot Delivery of Electrically-Charged IL-1RA for Targeting Osteoarthritis-Associated Inflammation and Catabolism in Multiple Joint Tissues”.

Slavov Named Paul G. Allen Distinguished Investigator for Pioneering Single Cell Proteomics Research
Bioengineering Assistant Professor Nikolai Slavov was recently named a prestigious Allen Distinguished Investigator and was awarded a $1.5 million three-year grant to further his novel research on single cell proteomics. The Paul G. Allen Frontiers Group supports early-stage research with the potential to reinvent entire fields. Slavov is the first from Northeastern to receive the award.

Bioengineers Develop Innovative Respiratory-Assist Device as Alternative to Ventilator
BioE alumnus Craig Smallwood, PhD’18, invented a respiratory-assist device as an alternative to a ventilator for low-resource environments. BioE Professor and Chair Lee Makowski, in collaboration with physicians at Korle Bu Hospital in Ghana, has made the first few of these devices available for use on patients suffering from respiratory distress.
