Three COE Students Apply for 2024 Fulbright
Talin Calikyan, E’25, mechanical engineering, Molly Johnson, E’25, bioengineering and biochemistry, and Joshua Piatok, E’25, bioengineering, applied for a Fulbright Scholarships. Calikyan is pursuing a Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship in Spain, while Johnson applied for a Fulbright Study/Research (S/R) in New Zealand, and Piatok is seeking a Fulbright S/R in Germany.

Northeastern Team Awarded the Vivli AMR Surveillance Data Challenge Student Innovation Prize
A team of Northeastern graduate students and alumni, led by Harry Akligoh, PhD ’28, bioengineering, participated in the 2024 Vivli Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Surveillance Data Challenge and were awarded the Student Innovation Prize for their Microbiological Information Management System (microBIS) project.

Northeastern Nominates 6 COE Students for Prestigious Knight-Hennessy Scholarship
Alex Bender, E’20, MS’20, Matthew Coughlin, E’25, Maya De Los Santos, E’25, Jose Meza Llamosas, E’25, Dominic Pizzarella, E’25, and Daniel Sneyers Pont, E’21, MS’21, were six of eight nominated by Northeastern for the Knight-Hennessy Scholarship, which develops a community of future global leaders to address complex challenges through collaboration and innovation.

Modeling the Mechanics of Cell Migration
Physics/BioE University Distinguished Professor Herbert Levine and BioE/MIE Affiliated Faculty Alain Karma were awarded a $760,000 NSF grant for “Building Quantitative Models of Eukaryotic Cell Motility.” They will work with Ecole Normale in Paris as part of a special NSF program with the French Agence Nationale de la Recherche.

Best Poster Presentation Award at Fourth Aerosol Dosimetry Meeting
Charbel Yazbeck, PhD’28, bioengineering, advised by BioE Associate Professor Jessica Oakes, was awarded the best student poster presentation at the Fourth Aerosol Dosimetry Meeting, for his poster titled “Modeling and Evaluating the Pulmonary Impacts of a Wildland Firefighting Career Through Equivalent Murine Exposure.”

Using Synthetic Polymers To Break Down Biofilms
Inspired by the process barnacles undergo to break down bacteria before suctioning themselves to rocks, BioE Professor and Chair Abraham Joy is using his synthetic polymer to remove biofilms of bacteria that cause antibiotic-resistant infections. He co-authored research published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.
