Bioengineering Education and Experiences for a Career in Cancer Research
Luke DeMarco, E’24, bioengineering, is interested in a career in cancer research. He’s had two co-ops in the area of immunotherapy and cancer research, including at biotech startup Catamaran Bio and at Northeastern conducting research in a faculty member’s lab. He also went on a Dialogue of Civilizations to Italy and has applied for a Fulbright Scholarship to conduct research in Germany.

A Culture of Ambition and Determination
With a goal of earning a PhD, Melissa Scanlon, E’24, bioengineering and biochemistry, has had three research co-ops in the areas of cell biology and cellular engineering, and also studied abroad for semester at Mahidol University in Thailand.

PhD Spotlight: Suzanne Stasiak, PhD’23, Bioengineering
Suzanne Stasiak earned a PhD in bioengineering with a research focus on airway smooth muscle mechanics and interactions with the extracellular matrix in the context of understanding the development of asthma. She published a first-author paper in Science Advances in August 2020, and in 2021, was awarded the Northeastern University College of Engineering Outstanding Graduate Student Award.

Andrea Chávez Muñoz, E’24, bioengineering, is focusing her future on computational bioengineering, with co-op and internship experiences everywhere from Boston to Switzerland to her home in Lima, Peru.

Messer Wins Knight-Hennessey Fellowship
Bioengineering alum Conor Messer, E’19, was awarded a Knight-Hennessey Scholars fellowship and will pursue master’s degrees at Stanford University. Messer is an associate computational biologist at the Broad Institute.

Like many, Alexandra Silverman was first introduced to science in middle school in the form of a frog dissection. However, instead of the impending nausea many experience at the sight of internal organs, Silverman became enraptured by the beauty and intricacy of science.

Bioengineering students Joseph Blanchet, E’22, and Shandy Ndjigue, E’23, are recipients of the 2023 Compass Awards, which recognizes exemplary students from the senior class who, during their time on campus, have demonstrated a true dedication to a core set of values: leadership, volunteerism, academic integrity, and commitment to Northeastern.

Pursuing Bioengineering PhD to Affect Patient Outcomes through Research
Kevin Bardon, PhD’23, bioengineering, began his doctoral studies after a 20-year career of academic and industry research, with a goal to lead independent research. At Northeastern, he has jointly filed for a patent for a real-time immune biomarker detection system, is preparing to publish several papers on optimized photoacoustic contrast agents, and he presented his research at professional gatherings.
