BioE Alumni Spotlight: Rachel Horenstein, University of Denver

Rachel Horenstein, PhD, is a Teaching Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at the University of Denver. She currently teaches courses in solid mechanics and engineering design.

She earned her PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Northeastern University in 2020 where, as a member of the Multiscale Mechanics and Musculoskeletal Mechanobiology Lab, she investigated the impact of elite-level adolescent sports participation on hip joint development.

“Don’t lose sight of why you’re passionate about engineering. As a student, it can be easy to get lost in the textbook problem… But for me, it’s important that you never lose sight of the application and continue to ask questions. Why are you learning what you’re learning? Why is it important? How does it relate to why you wanted to be an engineer and what you see in the world around you?”
